Promoting mental health awareness in schools is very important for creating a happy and safe learning environment. Mental health refers to how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. It helps students study better and enjoy learning. When students are not mentally healthy, they cannot focus properly and may lose interest in their studies. They may experience stress, anxiety, or even loneliness. That is why taking care of mental health in schools is extremely important.
This topic is closely connected with pedagogy because teaching is not only about delivering lessons but also about understanding how students feel and learn. A good teacher understands that students can learn effectively only when their minds are peaceful and confident. Teachers can notice small changes in students’ behaviour, such as a decline in academic performance or becoming unusually silent in class. They can approach students with kindness, talk to them, and offer support.
Schools can organise workshops, counselling sessions, and awareness programmes to help students overcome fear and stress. Peer support clubs also help students share their feelings without fear of judgement. Talking openly about mental health in classrooms makes students more comfortable and reduces the stigma around seeking help. Parents must also be included in awareness programmes so they can understand their children better.
The government and NGOs such as the National Mental Health Programme, The Banyan, and the Live Love Laugh Foundation also work to spread mental health awareness and provide support. Promoting mental health is closely linked to pedagogy because teaching is not only about imparting knowledge but also about understanding students’ emotions. When teachers care for students’ mental health, learners become more active, happy, and confident in class.
Therefore, mental health awareness in schools is not an extra activity; it is an essential part of good teaching that helps build strong and emotionally balanced students.
