In today’s rapidly evolving world, we learn more from real life experience and social connection than from a classroom. Learning is about nurturing compassionate and responsible citizens. This is where we use volunteerism and service learning, which is one powerful way to make it happen. Volunteerism and service learning help students to
connect classroom learning with real life experience thus encouraging empathy and social responsibility.
WHAT IS VOLUNTEERISM AND SERVICE LEARNING?
Volunteerism is offering our time and effort to help the people or communities in need without expecting anything in return. It gives a sense of purpose and builds empathy, communication, and collaboration.
Service learning is an educational approach where academic learning combines with community service. It is learning through helping; thus, it makes learning more meaningful and help you to reflect on yourself.
Volunteerism and service learning in pedagogy can make learning meaningful by transforming passive learning to active learning. Through this approach students gain opportunities to develop valuable skills such as:
- To develop leadership skill, collaboration skill, time management, and problem-solving skills. (For e.g.: while organizing any programme, students divide tasks among them, take leadership roles, coordinate with each other, and manage time accordingly).
- Foster community connection: Through community connection, people interact often, work together, have a mutual support, and share a sense of belonging and unity. (For e.g.: during neighbourhood clean-up, volunteers and residents come together to collect trash. While cleaning, they support and encourage each other creating a unity) Service learning integrates classroom learning with community service thus students gaining life skills and community receiving service and support. (For e.g.: as part of college project, students volunteering to teach underprivileged children, while also gaining teaching experience).
- Helps to understand different cultures, different perspectives and help in overcoming challenges. (For e.g.: volunteers at cultural fair work meet people of different regions and learn about their traditions and work together to set up stalls)
- Adaptability: learning to adapt or adjust in new situations and facing unexpected problem and finding solutions for it quickly. (For e.g.: even though only few people showed up for the tree plantation drive, volunteers taking extra effort to complete the task).
- Helps in developing skills such as creativity, decision making, communication and help in in building character. (For e.g.: while organizing a donation drive, volunteers must create posters, communicate with people, and decide how to distribute items).
Volunteerism and service learning not only benefit students but also teachers. When teacher integrate traditional classroom learning with community service, it not only helps them grow professionally but also personally. It helps them deepen their connection to society and
students and to adopt various creative and reflective method for teaching. Students will able to engage and interact more thus having a trust in teachers. There will be a mutual understanding. Through community interaction teacher develops patience, empathy, and
communication skill and to collaborate with people from different backgrounds, professions. This helps them expand their professional network. Teachers shape their student to be compassionate, responsible citizens and change makers, contributing positively to the
society. Volunteerism strengthen their emotional intelligence. The experience from service learning help teachers to be passionate, more effective and purpose driven professionals.They inspire their students and create a positive impact in both classroom and community.
Even though, volunteerism and service learning are two different concepts, but share a same purpose that is serving communities while learning through the experience. Integrating these to pedagogy – is essential for modern education. It enables teachers to innovate their
teaching method, at the same time allow students to step into real world challenges.
